This city that borders Boston and Newton boasts a quirky, alternative scene, and is also home to some of the best eats in the greater Boston area. We love Brookline, and if you happen to visit, we know you'll love it, too -- with the help of some of these delicious restaurant recs.

Places on this Skoot

  • Zaftigs Delicatessen

    335 Harvard Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 975-0075

There are no words for Zaftig's -- but I'll try. A great (affordable) place for weekend-morning breakfasts and brunches, this "deli" (which in reality is more like a glorified diner) always busy for brunch. And really always busy in general, no matter what time of day.

If you're a first-timer, be sure to get the challah French toast or the banana stuffed french toast, both delicious. And even if you're watching the carb intake, give the bagel chips (given to you instead of bread when you sit down) a try -- yum!

  • Athan's Bakery

    1621 Beacon Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 734-7028

On a main corner in Washington Square, Athan's is, if anything, charming. With phenomenal baklava (and vanilla baklava gelato, for all of you big fans), it boasts great pastries, chocolates, gelato and cookies, which are a nice change from all of the Starbucks' in the area (and everywhere). There's a decent amount of seating, which acts as a nice place to get a cup of coffee (and treat!) with a friend or significant other.

  • Anna's Taqueria

    446 Harvard Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 277-7111

With a few locations in the greater Boston area, Anna's is a go-to for Mexican food lovers. While it may not be the most authentic Mexican food (compared to a burrito in, say, Tucson), it's cheap, quick and always filling. While I'm more of a soft taco fan myself, many an Anna's lover has boasted that they have the best burritos EVER.

  • Fugakyu Japanese Cuisine

    1280 Beacon Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 734-1268

There's no doubt that Fugakyu boasts an extensive sushi menu, and everything is always fresh. I think this is a staple in the Coolidge Corner area; however, it tends to be a bit overrated, especially for its pricier entrees. While I've found many of the places in Brookline tend to be a bit more on the casual side, Fugakyu is definitely a nice night out, and the spacious, decorated restaurant atmosphere adds to the experience.

  • Kupel's Bakery

    421 Harvard Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 566-9528

If you're looking for kosher baked goods, and even if kosher isn't a big factor for you, this is your mecca. An authentic Jewish bakery (closed on Saturdays), the bagels rival the best of the best NYC bagels, and they have great challah and pastries. One note: This is a grab-and-go place, and you likely won't be able to nab a seat.

    5
  • Paris Creperie

    278 Harvard Street , Brookline, MA : (617) 232-1770

A local joint to boot, it's a tiny hole in the wall that you'd likely overlook if visiting for the first time. Right by the Coolidge Corner movie theater (which constantly has lines around the block in the summer), Paris Creperie has cheap and tasty crepes -- both sweet and savory. The menu has a million options and lets you build your own.
