  • Miller Outdoor Theatre

100 Concert Dr , Houston, TX

In his will, mining engineer and cotton broker Jesse Wright Miller left his property to the city of Houston and requested it be used for municipal purposes — and thus the Miller Outdoor Theater was created. The venue has become a first-class amphitheater in Houston's Hermann Park, where events include dance performances, jazz concerts, classic cinema and multicultural festivals. The Miller presents all of these events to the public free of charge.

  • Sam Houston Race Park

7575 North Sam Houston Pkwy W , Houston, TX

Sam Houston Race Park offers a day of horse racing, dining and entertainment for the whole family. You can bring the kids for free, but they have to be 18 to gamble. Most nights feature a concert after the races, and food options ranges from simple snacks such as hot dogs and tacos to elegant fare at the Winner's Circle restaurant overlooking the track. If you're new to racing, a race park guide can walk you through your first bet.

  • Downtown Green Market

1500 Mckinney St , Houston, TX

Houston's newest recreational area, Discovery Green, is right in the middle of downtown. Picnic next to the Gateway Fountain, or play bocce, shuffleboard or horseshoes. Solar panels on the Alkek Building and the Lake House restaurant heat all of the water and generate all of the electricity on site, and the park's 12 acres are designed with organic boundaries such as trees and water. So sit back and commune with Mother Nature — but if you can't stand to be unplugged, the park is Wi-Fi connected.

  • Forbidden Gardens

23500 Franz Rd , Katy, TX

Forbidden Gardens will transport to you to ancient China without ever leaving Texas. The 40-acre outdoor museum displays 6,000 terra-cotta warriors, a scale replica of the army buried near the tomb of Emperor Qin in the third century B.C. and discovered in 1974. Other exhibits include a model of the Forbidden City, with figurines displaying the lifestyle of Imperial China. Listen to the garden's peaceful fountains and Chinese music, and imagine yourself in a faraway land.
