To understand Pappas Bar-B-Q's devoted following, talk to the people waiting in the line that extends out the door at lunchtime. They come for the tender, slow-smoked meats: beef, pork, turkey and chicken, served with sweet, smoky sauce and an array of sides. The real treat, though, is the loaded baked potato. Roughly the size of an SUV, it comes topped with butter and chopped brisket — and that's before you hit the trimmings bar and stuff it further with sour cream, chives, cheese and bacon bits.

Bonnie's Beef and Seafood Company serves up prime rib, strip steak and fried shrimp in a countrified atmosphere of crisp lace curtains and brass accents that's smart enough for business and comfortable enough for families.
