Goldberg's has just the right amount of fast-paced, NYC moxie to pass for the real thing and enough local cultural oddity to rate as a mild adventure. Decor runs from Broadway playbills and wrestling glamour pics, but the real eye candy is the meal. Dried meats hang above the counter, bagels and fresh breads tempt the senses, along with a giant pickle barrel. Sample the de rigueur Jewish deli exotica: kippered salmon, herring in sour cream, chopped liver, and beef tongue. Whether you order hot pastrami on rye, or just get tuna salad on a bagel, it's hard to go wrong.

This inexpensive, easygoing locale is NYC-corner-pizzeria good. You won't get chèvre or cilantro on your pizza here, but you will get traditional toppings such as anchovies, Italian sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, fresh mushrooms, and onions. The cheesy New York-style pies have thin, doughy crusts that exude the heavenly aroma of fresh-baked bread. Some are available by the slice. Most of the seating is on a large outdoor patio with a tiered fountain, statues of angels and gargoyles. The beer is always ice-cold.

This totally unpretentious neighborhood hangout has got the best biscuits in town, but that's not all that makes folks willing to wait up to an hour and a half for a table. A cozied-up storefront near the funky Little Five Points area, this place has a round-the-clock breakfast menu, plus an assortment of dishes that are best described as comfort food for the granola crowd. Though there's a vegetarian slant to the menu, there's also plenty to please carnivores. You can get a cup of coffee while you wait outside for your table, but to avoid the serious crowds, come on a weekday or in the early afternoon.

For over 80 years The Varsity had been the place to be when you're in need of a hot dog the way you want it - slaw dog, chili dog, chili cheese dog, you name it there are all kinds of dogs.
