In the 1930s, philanthropist and arts benefactor Archer M. Huntington donated land to create a large public garden, a portion of which today has been preserved as Huntington Beach State Park. The park’s claim to fame is its unique bird-watching experience, as its marshes attract many types of ducks as well as ocean birds like gannets, loons and scooters. Huntington Beach State Park also hosts an Environmental Education Center that will take you on tours to see alligators, loggerhead turtles and the area’s endangered plants and animals. Camping is available, as are tours of the winter home Archer Huntington shared with sculptor Anna Hyatt.
