  • Georgia's Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain Park , Atlanta, GA

The world's largest gray-granite outcropping features a giant relief sculpture of Confederate leaders. It's the focal point of a 3,2000 acre recreation area that offers 10 miles of hiking trails, 15 miles of biking-jogging paths, golf, tennis, fishing and water slides. A 1.3-mile trail takes visitors to the top of the mountain, or let the Skyride gondola whisks you to the top. Within the park, there's also a Civil War museum, two hotels, a restored antebellum plantation, scenic railroad and paddle wheel boat. Come on a summer evening for the Laser-show Spectacular, a display of laser lights and fireworks with animation and music.

  • Chattahoochee River Park

203 Azalea Dr , Roswell, GA

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area begins near Buford, Georgia, and continues downstream to Peachtree Creek near downtown Atlanta. The river attracts us for different reasons. People come to float down the river, as the locals will say, "shoot the 'hooch." Jump in a raft, canoe, kayak, or pedal boat and take a fun trip down the Chattahoochee River. Even if you don't have your own boat, there is equipment available for rental. You can also hike the trails along its banks, fish in its cold water, and simply relax. Take the whole day or just a quick getaway from the fast pace of the city life.

It's a great place for children, with plenty of open, car-free spaces. Don't let the kids miss PlayScape at the 12th Street entrance; created by well-known sculptor Isamu Noguchi, it's a climbable series of brightly colored geometric shapes complete with ladders and slides. The Midtown skyline beyond is magnificent.
