In 1891, a mansion was completed that was the largest, and most expensive in Minnesota. It belonged to James J. Hill and his family, and he built it with the fortune he made as the owner and developer of The Great Northern Railway. Hill reaped the benefits of a shipping empire, and poured much of it into this now historical home. Sparing no expense to install, the then groundbreaking - central heating, electric lighting and indoor plumbing. Tours provide a glimpse of life in the nineteenth century - including hand carved woodwork, a two-story skylight art gallery, and 16 crystal chandeliers.
