  • Guthrie Theater

    818 South 2nd Street , Minneapolis, MN

    Sir Tyrone Guthrie was an artiste and to him, Broadway was a commercial wasteland concerned only with money and he aimed to create an alternative in the Twin Cities. In 1963, that alternative was his Guthrie Theater, a place where great works of literature could find the people. Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn were amongst the first to grace its stage. Today, the Guthrie is a Minneapolis institution, even if you don't see a play here, you can visit the brand new three-stage theater, and admire the breathtaking architecture in the level three and four lobbies or drop by for lunch at their restaurant.

  • Minneapolis Institute of Arts

    Since it opened in 1915 the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts has features art and antiquities spanning 5000 years of history - particularly strong is its Asian Art collection. If you're with kids, take them to the Family Center, which has snacks, games, and computer activities suitable for the young ones. You can also enjoy three different restaurants inside the museum. Once you've recharged, you may want to take a less-traveled trip outside the museum grounds, to the Purcell-Cutts house, a fine example of Prairie School architecture, which the museum renovated in 1990.

    The Walker Art Center boasts a collection of Modern Art from names as distinguished as Giacometti, Moore, and Picasso. But the museum has also established itself as a cultural center, with excellent exhibitions that go beyond the visual including collections of films, performance on video, sound exploration and an emerging art form called "net.art." (VO: PLEASE SAY Net Dot Art) Step outdoors to find what the Museum calls "Walker Inside Out" with sculpture garden where you can stroll in fresh air. Admire statues like "Spoonbridge and Cherry," a giant spoon with a cherry defying gravity at its tip.
