Jackson Square, in the heart of the French Quarter, has been the center of New Orleans life since the city's founding. Originally a military parade ground and open-air market named the Place D'Armes, this public square was the hub of local shipping and commerce. Following the Battle of New Orleans in 1814, the Baroness Pontalba financed a redesign and the square was renamed for the battle's hero, Andrew Jackson.
